Literary Walking Tour of Brunswick

Enjoy exclusive access to rarely seen spaces on this tour with Bowdoin College Associate Professor Tess Chakkalakal. A widely published author on nineteenth-century African American and American literature, Tess is the founder and faculty director of the Stowe Writers Collective at Bowdoin. Under her expert guidance, your group of up to 10 will begin your tour in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Writing Room at the Stowe House in Brunswick, where Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written and one of only two stops on Maine’s underground railroad. After a discussion about the novel and its connections to Maine, head a few blocks away to the historic First Parish Church, where Stowe had her vision of Uncle Tom. Finally, your tour will conclude with a visit to Bowdoin’s Special Collections, where guests can engage directly with rare books and historic memorabilia.

Must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance on a mutually agreeable date. Donated by Tess Chakkalakal.

Overnight on Seguin
A once-in-a-lifetime chance for up to five people to spend the night at Seguin Light, an authentic historic Maine lighthouse. Enjoy the quarters of the keeper's house, with sleeping arrangements in two upstairs guest rooms: one with two twin beds, the other with one twin and one full bed (linens provided). Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Seguin Island: ospreys, gulls, bald eagles, crashing waves, the Seguin foghorn, lobster boat engines, the on-island keepers telling tales. A tour of the lighthouse is available from the keepers. This package also includes transportation to and from the island from the dock at Fort Popham in Phippsburg.
To be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date. Minimal kitchen facilities include a small microwave, coffee maker, and a mini fridge available for your convenience. A charcoal grill is provided for guests—no open fires are allowed on the island. Must be physically able to climb from the lobster boat down into a small dinghy and from the dinghy back up into the lobster boat; Seguin Island landing is on rocky beach and guests should assume that they will get their feet wet and may want to pack any items that cannot get wet in plastic bags. The climb from beach to lighthouse is often steep and takes approximately 15 minutes. Guests must bring all food and drinking water and leave with their trash. For additional information, visit https://seguinisland.org/the-island/spend-the-night/. Donated by Friends of Seguin Island Light and Five Islands Charters.
