Yacht RANGER Half-Hull Model
A 70-inch half-hull model (1/2-inch to the foot), of the J-Class sloop Ranger built at Bath Iron Works for Harold S. Vanderbilt's defense of the America's Cup in 1937. Ranger was designed by W. Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens and defeated the challenger, Endeavour II, in four straight races. This model was built and carved from clear pine boards by Jon Johansen and painted by BlueJackets Shipcrafters of Searsport; the backboard was cut and shaped by Eric Dow, Boatbuilder of Brooklin, and varnished by Ann Johansen. The backboard is 75 inches long by 19" wide and with model will weigh more than 75 pounds.
Winning bidder is also invited to return to the museum for a private viewing of the original Ranger plans in the Nathan R. Lipfert Research Library.
